To Praise, to Bless, to Preach | The Story of St. Rose Priory

Near Springfield in Washington County, a Gothic church stands on Loretto Road with a cemetery on the neighboring hill.

Founding of the Priory (1806)

In 1806, Father Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., arrived in Kentucky with three Dominican friars from Maryland. They sought to establish a Dominican presence to minister to the growing Catholic population in the western frontier.

Construction and Early Years

Father Fenwick financed the priory’s establishment by selling inherited family land. The Dominicans purchased land near Springfield, creating a site dedicated to Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint of the Americas.

Educational Endeavors

The Dominicans established the first Catholic college west of the Allegheny Mountains — Saint Thomas College — in 1808.

Expansion of the Dominican Mission

Father Fenwick was later appointed the first Bishop of Cincinnati in 1822.

Architectural Significance

The current church, constructed in 1852, exemplifies Gothic Revival architecture featuring pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses.

Modern Era and Preservation

The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues serving as an active parish today.
