The Origin of Holy Cross Catholic Church

The First Catholic Church in Kentucky

Nestled in Marion County, Holy Cross Catholic Church holds the distinction of being the first Catholic church in Kentucky and the first west of the Allegheny Mountains. Founded in 1785 by Maryland Catholic settlers, the congregation occupies land donated by Basil Hayden. Father de Rohan provided early ministerial services to the community.

The settlement, called Pottinger Creek Settlement, housed Catholic families seeking religious freedom. The initial log structure later gave way to a brick church in 1823, which survives today. A cemetery monument marks the original log church’s location. “Rohan’s Knob,” a nearby geographic feature, memorializes Father de Rohan’s presence.
